Bigcommerce vs. Shopify; A Price Comparison

Bigcommerce and Shopify are both e-commerce platforms and pretty much offer the same functionality.  It may therefore not be a straightforward job to provide a Bigcommerce vs. Shopify comparison, but for the sake of helping you choose the best one, we will give it a shot.

If you look at it from the kind of business the platform’s target, Bigcommerce, as the name suggests, is more inclined towards bigger enterprises.  Shopify has found its popularity among smaller companies, especially start-ups.

We will, however, try to give a more in-depth analysis of the two platforms, and hopefully, you can make a choice.

• An exploration of Bigcommerce e-commerce platform

The Bigcommerce platform is excellent for businesses that are starting on the scaling journey.  It is especially ideal for any company that has a wide range of products. You also get quotes for real-time shipping and an extensive range of SEO tools for your marketing efforts.

However,   Bigcommerce has the disadvantage of giving you fewer options than Shopify for integrations and apps.  You also have a selling limit and to not get one click selling.

• An exploration of Shopify

Shopify is an excellent place for anyone who wants to explore the e-commerce platform.  It is therefore ideal for start-ups, although this is in no way to say that more established businesses cannot use it.  You get a lot of help as a newcomer and have access to a wide range of apps and integrations.  The platform has no selling limit and is easy to set up even for someone who does not know how to code. The disadvantage with Shopify is that you may need to get 3rd party apps for some of the features you may need.  , secondly, you can use the Shopify payment, but if you use third-party payment gateway’s, you will have to pay a fee.

We will focus on one aspect, on our side to side comparison of the two platforms; pricing.

Before opting for an e-commerce platform, it is crucial that you consider how much it will cost you in the long run.  Both Bigcommerce and Shopify have plans that you can use for your business.  There are, however, some points you should note.

• Plans

The Shopify basic plan starts at $29 per month, with the most expensive, advanced Shopify that comes in at $299.  Bigcommerce begins at the same basic rate but is slightly cheaper on the most sophisticated; which comes in at 249.95 dollars.

With Bigcommerce, you also have the option of getting a custom plan if you prefer; an option that is not available on Shopify. Pay close consideration to what the different plans have.  You may realize that in Bigcommerce, you can get abandoned cart recovery on the plus plan, while in Shopify it exists in the basic.

Both Shopify and Bigcommerce have gift cards, but in the former, they come in the Shopify plan, while in Bigcommerce, you will get it in the Standard plan.

• Transaction fees

Shopify will charge you a transaction fee if you do not use Shopify payments, which only exists in 11 countries.  If you are outside the coverage area, you will pay a fee ranging from 0.5% to 2%.  Bigcommerce, on the other hand, will not charge you a transaction fee, but you cannot make more than a certain number of sales per plan. It, therefore, forces you to upgrade if you want more flexibility.

Our article above has given a comparison of the pricing for both Shopify and Bigcommerce. Even as you consider the price disparities, also think about what it will cost you to add the different integrations and apps.  To get the most functionality out of it, you will have to customize it to what is suitable for your business, and that is why it is vital that you have a good grasp of the overall cost.
